THE STORY OF FOUR-EYED NELL
The song, "Four-Eyed Nell", written by Karmann Powell, started with a trip to the archives at Sharlot Hall Museum to learn more about the area formerly known as Poland, Arizona. Karmann's daughter, Carley, is a history buff. They spent most of the day browsing through books, magazines and newspapers.
They ran across an article in a travel magazine that told a story of a woman who lived in Poland, AZ at the turn of the 19th century. The story literally haunted Karmann for 4 years. She finally sat down one night and penned "Four-Eyed Nell" as a tribute to a woman of the past.
Below is the actual article that inspired the song.
